How to descale your kettle

Did you know that descaling your kettle could be done for as little as 5 pence, in roughly two minutes, without any harsh chemicals, scrubbing, or special descaling products?

What you will need:

Lemon juice or distilled vinegar

Cost:

Lemon juice £0.33p (I buy mine from Aldi. Gets you about 5 uses roughly, probably more).

Distilled vinegar £0.39p (I buy mine from Tesco. Gets you about 10-15 uses, probably more).

Process for using lemon juice (2-5m):

  1. Pour a small amount into your kettle – You only need to cover the surface
  2. Let it sit for 2-5m (depending on the severity)
  3. Rinse off thoroughly

Tip: turn the kettle slightly on its side after 2 minutes (without spilling the contents) and check the surface, if it needs longer then just let it sit to work for as long as necessary.

Process for using distilled vinegar:

  1. Pour a small amount into your kettle – You only need to cover the surface
  2. Let it sit for 5-10m (depending on the severity this can take up to an hour)
  3. Add a cup of water and boil the kettle
  4. Rinse off thoroughly

Tip: Repeat the process if scales are really bad

Final step: sit back and enjoy an even more delicious cup of tea!
