Review: Dr. Beckmann Oven Cleaner

Ovens can get disgusting. Even a brand new or recently cleaned oven can get caked with grease after just one or two Sunday roasts! Cleaning an oven is one of those jobs that is very easy to put off and the more you put it off the more disgusting it gets, therefore you want to put it off longer and the cycle continues.

A lot of people pay a specialist oven cleaners to come in and do the job for them, with prices ranging from £15 to £115, depending on the depth of the clean. If this is something you really want to do, then why not. However, if you’re reading this post then I assume you’re looking for a cheap and easy alternative. Luckily, I can help!

With all the various de-greasers and oven cleaning products on the market you might be a bit confused as to which one you should buy. I’m going to keep this very simple and talk about one product which does it ALL, without having to spend big bucks: Dr Beckmann’s Oven Cleaner.

What makes Dr Beckmann Oven Cleaner special?

The stand-out feature of Dr Beckmann Oven Cleaner is that when you use this, you will be cleaning your oven with a minimal amount of scrubbing. There will be no flecks of grease flying around your kitchen to speak of and for the most part this truly is a soak, leave and rinse job.

One of the problems with some products that you leave to soak is that gravity can take over and cause the cleaner to run down the sides. The Dr Beckmann Oven Cleaner however is a sturdy gel-based product which is effective at sticking to the sides of the oven walls, meaning there are going to be far fewer surfaces escaping your attention.

Finally, whilst there is a small smell when you first spray the oven cleaner, this does live up to its bold claim to be an odourless gel as it is practically odourless when it has been left to soak – a refreshing change from most tough acting cleaning products. It also helps that there are no harmful or aggressive vapours or fumes.

How to clean your oven using the Dr Beckmann Oven Cleaner:

The simple answer: Spray, leave, wipe, rinse!

Or, here’s a step by step guide:

Preparation is always key!

  1. Remove the oven racks and soak them in hot soapy water or hot water with a very small amount of fabric softener (you can use your bathtub or get this specialist tray). Then wipe any residue off, nice and easy.
  2. If you have a thick layer of grease on the bottom of your oven, then scrape it off using an oven scraper, or whatever else you have around the house which might work (safely).
  3. Grab your spray, shake the bottle then turn the nozzle to on. This is the fun part, spray all over the oven (avoid fans and heating elements) and leave it to sit for anywhere from half an hour to overnight, depending on the severity. This is where the magic happens!
  4. When you come back to the oven all you need to do is WIPE the residue away. Be prepared to use a cloth you can throw away afterwards as this product will lift all the grease and grime from your oven and leave it sparkling clean! (You can spray the glass door or remove it if your oven allows).
  5. Important step – make sure you rinse the oven with warm soapy water to remove any of the product residue.

Optional step: If the spray hasn’t shifted everything on the first go then repeat step 3-6. Some ovens do need a second spray if there is a lot of caked on grease (see below pic).
