Surprise baby rabbits!
The breeder told us we were buying two male mini lop kittens. When we took them to the vet for their myxomatosis vaccines the vet confirmed they were indeed two boy rabbits. So, surprise surprise when the first litter turned up! Unfortunately none of them survived (apparently common for new mums). But we immediately separated Ma (Hopps) and Pa (Chewie) and arranged for, who I guessed to be the actual male, to be castrated a week later.
Roughly two weeks post castration and Hopps (the female) started making what was very obviously a big fat nest! I figured it might be a phantom pregnancy, since they were kept separated for that vital week (except that one time when Chewie broke out of the run and we found them curled up together in the morning… oh wait…)
Almost another week later and she’s still nesting like crazy! I thought I’d be responsible so threw together some homemade nesting boxes for her, which she outright rejected, choosing only to use them as litter trays. Humphs.
I was about to give up on the idea she was pregnant after another week passed until finally, one Sunday morning, we came down to find movement from the nest! Two gorgeous baby bunnies (kittens) were buried under a mountain of rabbit hair, newspaper shavings, and hay!
I have been checking the two new arrivals daily, using gloves, and making sure their tummies are nice and full and they are warm and healthy. We’re over a week in and so far so good. Its amazing to see how rapidly they grow within the first week! I’ll update this with more pictures as time passes, but here is a compilation of their first week so far!
